Brian R. Searles is a leader in local and state government for almost 40 years. He is currently the Director of Aviation at the Burlington International Airport. Immediately prior to this assignment, he served as the City Manager in St. Albans, VT where he was responsible for all operations of a small city including water utility, wastewater utility, full-time police and fire departments and all other normal municipal functions. For four years (1999 – 2003), he was the Secretary of Transportation for the State of Vermont responsible for maintenance and project development for the highway and railroad system along with 10 state airports. The agency consists of more than 1,300 people at 68 locations around the state and had a budget in FY-2003 of about $330,000,000. He led the agency during the 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and Twin Towers which created wide spread concerns for the nation’s travel systems. Mr. Searles served as the Deputy Secretary for the Vermont Agency of Administration where he assisted the Secretary of Administration in leading an agency of more than 600 employees responsible for budgeting, taxes, personnel, buildings, general services, information technology and state libraries. He assisted the Secretary and the Governor in investigating and resolving difficult organizational and personnel problems throughout state government. Mr. Searles was the Commissioner of Personnel for the State of Vermont prior to his assignment in the Agency of Administration, and served the City of South Burlington as its Chief of Police from 1989 – 1994. Before this, he was the Executive Director of the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council and a South Burlington police officer where he rose through all ranks and assignments to the position of Chief of Police. His commitment to public service and the citizens of Vermont is evidenced in having worked with the following groups: Vermont Rail Council (Chair), Vermont Aviation Council (Chair), Public Transit Advisory Council (Chair), Vermont Traffic Committee (Chair), Municipal Equipment Loan Fund Committee (Chair), Burlington Police Commission (Chair), Vermont Police Association (President), Leadership Champlain (Chair), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (Executive Board), Northeastern Association of State Transportation Officials (Vice-President), Vermont Downtown Board, Governor’s Development Cabinet, Vermont Chiefs of Police Association, International Chiefs of Police Association, Vermont State Colleges Advanced Standing Committee, Chittenden County United Way Campaign Cabinet and Speaker’s Bureau and the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization. He served on the Governor’s Commission on Climate Change from 2005 to 2007 and is currently Vice-Chair of Government Relations for the Airports Council International, North America. He earned a Master of Science in Administration from St. Michael's College.
