Dr. Gary J. Margolis has more than a decade of experience in higher education public safety as the Chief of Police at the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. During his near 20-year distinguished career in public safety he has served as a deputy sheriff; police officer; and police academy administrator.
Under Dr. Margolis’ leadership for the University of Vermont’s police department, the agency received international accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies where Dr. Margolis is now also a commissioner.
Shortly after the 9/11 tragedies, Dr. Margolis was appointed by The Honorable James Douglas, Governor of the State of Vermont, to serve on the Governor’s Homeland Security Advisory Committee. He is involved in several national and international initiatives for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).
Dr. Margolis has testified before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and is a highly sought-after consultant specializing in higher education and K-12 related crises response and communications; emergency management; public safety management studies; educational campus security and safety audits; and workplace violence prevention and violence against women crimes.
He is a graduate of the Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government Executive Education Program and serves as an adviser to the United States Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security on matters relating to campus safety and higher education security. He holds faculty appointments at The University of Vermont and Norwich University and serves on the Roger Williams University Justice System Training & Research Institute Advisory Board. Dr. Margolis holds a Masters Degree in Education and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
