Traditional crime prevention strategies deal with attacks from outside the organization but the manner in which workplace violence is often carried out today shows that the perpetrator comes from inside, either the organization’s own staff or clientele. Random violence is less and less the cause of these problems. With regards to awareness and prevention, the most effective defense is to combine preventive human resource practices with the identification of warning signs of violent behavior. We define violence in this regard as behavior and actions that would lead a reasonable and prudent person to interpret a potential for violence. Our solutions for educational institutions is to include policy development and training that explores the leading motives for workplace violence and sources in the organization. We work with higher education and K-12 clients to enhance environmental and support structures including behavioral threat assessment teams (for students, faculty, staff and guests) and grievance procedures. We assist in response and recovery planning as a post-incident response to a violent act in the workplace.
